Troubleshooting
Sign-In and Account Issues
I can't sign in with Google or Apple
- Make sure your device has an active internet connection
- Confirm you're using the same Google or Apple account you registered with
- For Apple Sign-In: go to Settings > [Your Name] > Password & Security > Apps Using Apple ID and verify the Vocabulary app is listed
- Force-close the app and try again
I created an account but my progress is missing
Account linking upgrades your anonymous session to a real account. If progress appears missing after signing in:
- Check the Profile tab to confirm you signed into the same account as before (email address shown)
- Force-close and reopen — data may still be syncing
- If you reinstalled the app on the same device, the anonymous session data may have been cleared by the OS before you had a chance to link it. Contact support with your account email
I reinstalled the app and lost my progress
If you were on the free or ad-free tier (no cloud sync), progress is stored locally only and is lost on reinstall. If you were on the Basic Subscription, reinstall and sign back into the same account — the sync engine will restore your clusters, mastery levels, and streak history from the cloud.
Learning and Exercise Issues
My streak is not incrementing
Your streak increments once per calendar day when you complete at least one of: a cluster, a review session, or a Quick Drill. "Reading" a cluster without tapping Complete Cluster does not count. Make sure you complete the exercise section and tap the completion button before closing the app.
Streaks reset at midnight local time. If you lost a streak unexpectedly:
- Check whether you crossed midnight without completing a session on that calendar day
- Streaks reset at 12:00 AM local device time, not at the server's timezone
I completed a cluster but words aren't appearing in my review queue
Words enter the spaced repetition schedule after their first cluster completion. The review queue shows words due today based on their SM-2 schedule. After completing a new cluster, words typically appear in the review queue after 1 day (first review interval). If you just completed a cluster and the review queue count didn't update, force-close and reopen the app to refresh the count.
My review queue shows 0 but I've learned many words
If no words are due for review, the review queue count shows 0. This is normal — spaced repetition schedules words at increasing intervals, so well-known words may not come up for weeks. The Progress tab > Struggling words section shows words with the lowest ease factors if you want to review them outside the scheduled queue.
An exercise seems to have the wrong correct answer
Exercise answers are generated from cluster content (definitions, usage examples, nuance notes). If you believe an answer is incorrect, report it via Profile > Help > Report a Bug with the specific word, exercise type, and what answer you think is correct. Include the cluster name.
Quick Drill is showing words from clusters I haven't learned yet
Quick Drill pulls from your learned vocabulary only — words from clusters you've completed. If you're seeing unfamiliar words, check whether a family member or someone else used the app on your device, or whether a sync from another device brought in progress you don't recognize.
Offline Mode
I'm offline — what works?
All learning works offline. Word cluster content is cached locally after first load. Your progress, streaks, mastery levels, and exercise history are stored in Drift (SQLite) on your device. You can:
- Complete new clusters
- Do review sessions
- Play Quick Drill
- Browse the Library
Cloud sync for Basic Subscription users requires internet — progress made offline queues automatically and syncs when you reconnect.
Sync Issues (Basic Subscription)
My progress isn't syncing between my phone and tablet
- Confirm both devices are signed into the same Basic Subscription account
- Check your internet connection on both devices
- On the device that appears out of sync, go to Profile and look for a Sync status indicator — if it shows an error, tap to retry
- Sync triggers on app open and after session completion — wait a moment before switching devices
I lost my streak during a sync
Streaks are resolved using last-write-wins conflict resolution. If two devices had different streak data and synced, the most recent timestamp wins. If your streak appears to have been overwritten incorrectly, contact support with your account email and approximate dates.
Subscription and Purchase Issues
I purchased Ad-Free but ads are still showing
- Force-close and reopen the app
- Go to Profile > Settings > Restore Purchases
- Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID or Google account used for the purchase
I subscribed to Basic Subscription but AI Writing Suggestions aren't available
AI Writing Suggestions is a Basic Subscription feature. If it's not accessible after subscribing:
- Go to Profile > Subscription to confirm the subscription is active
- Force-close and reopen the app to refresh the tier check
- Tap Restore Purchases if the subscription status isn't being detected
I want to cancel my subscription
Subscriptions are managed through the App Store or Google Play:
- iOS: Settings > [Your Name] > Subscriptions
- Android: Google Play app > Profile icon > Payments & subscriptions
When a subscription expires, the tier returns to free. All your mastery data and cluster completion history remain on your device.
Still Need Help?
Open the app, go to Profile > Settings, and tap Report a Bug. Include your device model, OS version, and a description of the issue. For subscription or purchase questions, include your account email.
