Troubleshooting
Login Issues
I can't sign in
- Check your internet connection
- Make sure you're using the same Google or Apple account you originally signed in with
- Close the app completely and reopen it
- If using Apple Sign-In, ensure it's enabled in Settings > [Your Name] > Password & Security
Linking my account failed mid-sign-in
If Google Sign-In returns an error or you cancel partway through:
- Your anonymous session is fully preserved — your quiz results, weekly focus, and journal entries are all still there
- A clear error message appears on the Account screen with a Retry button
- Tap Retry when you have a stable connection to try again
- No partial account state is created — your data is safe
- This applies to all failure types: cancelled sign-in, expired tokens, network drops, and region restrictions
I signed in but my data is gone
- Make sure you're using the same account (check your email in Settings)
- If you previously used the app anonymously, that data is separate from your signed-in account
- Anonymous session data is promoted when you upgrade to an account — if you signed in before taking the quiz, take it again
Sync Issues
My journal entries aren't syncing
- Check your internet connection
- Pull down on the journal screen to force a sync
- If entries were created offline, they'll sync automatically when you reconnect
- If the issue persists, sign out and sign back in
I see duplicate entries
This can happen if a sync conflict occurred. Open the duplicate entry — if it has the same content, you can safely delete one.
Notifications
I'm not receiving weekly focus reminders
- Check that notifications are enabled for Anti-Bias Trainer in your device settings
- In the app, go to Settings and verify notification preferences are turned on
- Make sure you have a weekly focus bias set (Library > select a bias > Set as Weekly Focus)
- On Android, check that battery optimization isn't preventing background notifications
Notifications come at the wrong time
Adjust your notification schedule in Settings > Notifications. You can set preferred days and time windows.
Quiz & Exercises
The quiz won't load
The bias awareness quiz loads from bundled content when you're offline, so you can take it even without an internet connection — including on first launch with no network. If it fails to load:
- If a Retry button appears, tap it — this re-runs initialization without restarting the app
- Check your internet connection if you want the latest question set
- Try closing and reopening the app
- If on a slow connection, wait 10–15 seconds for content to load
I retook the assessment offline — will my results be saved?
Yes. The assessment runs fully offline. Your attempt is queued locally and syncs when you reconnect. Results are calculated locally, so you see your score and improvement immediately. The app prevents duplicate attempts from being created during sync.
My quiz results weren't saved
If you took the quiz without an account, results are shown but not persisted. Sign in and retake the quiz to save your baseline score.
An exercise seems stuck
- Tap the back button and reopen the exercise
- If still stuck, close the app and reopen it
- Report the issue using Settings > Report a Bug
I lost network mid-exercise
If your connection drops while completing an exercise scenario, the app continues normally — scenario content is served from cache. Your response is saved locally and syncs when you reconnect. Feedback and role-reversal results display from local data without interruption.
Journal Entries
My journal entry won't save
If the Save button is disabled or you see error highlights on the form:
- Check that all required fields are filled in — a situation type must be selected and the note field cannot be empty
- Field-level error messages appear next to each missing input
- Any text you've already typed is preserved — you won't lose your work
- Fill in the highlighted fields and Save will become active again
Offline Mode
Can I use the app without internet?
Yes — most core features work offline:
- Bias library: Loads from local cache after your first visit. Search and detail screens work offline — search operates over cached data. An offline indicator appears so you know you're working locally.
- Weekly focus: You can set or change your focus bias offline. It saves locally with a pending sync status and syncs when you reconnect — no duplicate focus entries are created.
- Journal entries: You can create entries offline. They sync automatically when the network returns.
- Awareness quiz: Quiz questions load from bundled content, so you can take (or retake) the assessment offline — even on first launch with no prior network connection.
- Exercise scenarios: Cached exercise content works offline. If your network drops mid-exercise, the app continues seamlessly — responses save locally and sync on reconnect.
Some features do require a network connection — purchasing a subscription and loading brand-new content that hasn't been cached yet.
Entries created offline aren't appearing
After reconnecting, pull down on the journal screen to trigger a sync. Offline entries should appear with a small sync indicator.
Dashboard
My dashboard is empty
If you've just created your account or haven't used the app much yet, the dashboard shows friendly empty states for each metric (streak, entries, exercises, score trend). The score chart displays a "Take your first assessment" prompt. As you use the app, metrics populate automatically — no configuration needed.
Subscriptions
My purchase was declined
If the App Store or Google Play declines your subscription purchase:
- A clear error message appears on the paywall screen — your subscription status remains unchanged
- You can tap Retry to try again or Restore Purchases if you believe you already subscribed
- No partial subscription is created locally — you stay on your current tier until a purchase completes
- Common causes: expired payment method, parental controls, or regional restrictions. Check your store account settings.
Performance
The app is slow or laggy
- Close other apps running in the background
- Make sure you're running the latest version of the app
- Restart your device
- If using an older device, try reducing the number of journal entries displayed (they load in batches)
Still Need Help?
Open the app, go to Settings, and tap Report a Bug or Request a Feature. Include as much detail as possible — device model, OS version, and steps to reproduce the issue.
App Startup and Loading
The app is stuck on the splash screen
When you open the app, it shows a brief loading screen while it initializes. This normally completes within 2 seconds and always within 5 seconds. If the app appears stuck:
If an error message appears: Tap Retry to re-run initialization without restarting. If a Continue Offline button also appears, your data is ready locally — tap it to continue without a network connection.
If the screen is just hanging (no message):
- Wait up to 5 seconds — initialization is still in progress.
- Check your network connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
- Force-close and reopen the app:
- iOS: Swipe up to open the app switcher, swipe the app card away, then reopen.
- Android: Open Recent Apps, swipe the app card away, then reopen.
- Check for an app update in the App Store or Google Play.
- Restart your device.
If the issue persists, go to Settings → Report a Bug with your device model and OS version.
