Meet Marcus

Background: Marcus is a supportive parent in his early 40s with two kids at different grade levels. He discovered Big Bad Words through a recommendation from his children's teacher, Mr. Torres, who uses it in class. Marcus values educational screen time and found the grade-level vocabulary lists to be exactly what he was looking for.

How Marcus Uses Big Bad Words

Marcus has 15 completed games: 5 with his younger child, 5 with his older child, and 5 full family sessions (3 players). Average game runs about 25 minutes.

He uses three built-in word lists to match each child's level:

  • Clean — for family games where anyone can play any word
  • Grade 6–8 Vocabulary — for his younger child
  • Grade 9–12 Vocabulary — for his older child

He also created a Weekly Spelling Words custom list (20 words, updated each week) that mirrors the vocabulary words his kids are studying in school. When the AI plays a word from the list during a game, it sparks a conversation.

What Marcus Values

  • Grade-appropriate word lists that match school curriculum
  • Clean word list for all-ages family play
  • The ability to create custom lists with this week's spelling words
  • A game his kids actually want to play — not just another flashcard app
  • Cloud sync (Plus) so games started on the tablet can be seen on his phone

A Typical Session

Marcus sets up a 2-player game between his younger child and the Easy AI, loading the Grade 6–8 Vocabulary list. He watches the game while the child takes their turns, occasionally helping them spot a word they missed. After the game he opens the History tab and scrolls through the words played — it doubles as a quick vocabulary review.
