How to Write a Journal Entry for a Visit
David, a history-focused traveler who writes detailed journal entries averaging 200 words each, always includes historical context in his notes. After visiting Bald Head Island Light in North Carolina, he documented its Civil War history, attached 3 photos, and tagged the entry "civil-war, north-carolina." This guide shows how to create a journal entry.
Requirements
You must have logged the lighthouse as visited before you can write a journal entry for it.
Steps
-
Open the lighthouse detail screen for a lighthouse you have visited (it will show a visited checkmark).
-
Tap "Add Journal Entry." The journal entry form opens.
-
Write your text. Type your notes in the text field — no minimum or maximum length. Write as much or as little as you want. Plain text only (no rich formatting).
-
Add photos (optional). Tap the photo picker to select up to 5 photos from your device's camera roll. Photos are attached to this journal entry.
-
Set the date (optional). Defaults to your visit date. Adjust if you are writing the entry days after the visit.
-
Select weather (optional). Choose from: Sunny, Cloudy, Rainy, Foggy, Snowy, Windy.
-
Add tags (optional). Type free-text tags separated by commas — for example: "history, civil-war, north-carolina, sunset." Tags help you find related entries later.
-
Set a mood/experience rating (optional). Rate your overall experience on a 1–5 scale.
-
Tap Save. The journal entry is saved to the lighthouse's detail page.
Viewing Your Journal Entry
- Open the lighthouse detail screen — your journal entry is visible below the visit information.
- On the My Visits tab, the lighthouse row shows the number of journal entries you have written for it.
Editing or Deleting an Entry
- Open the journal entry from the lighthouse detail screen.
- Tap Edit to modify any field, then save.
- Tap Delete to remove the entry (confirmation required). Deletion is permanent.
Expected Outcome
The journal entry is saved to the lighthouse with your text, photos, date, weather, tags, and mood rating. It appears on the lighthouse detail page and is counted on the My Visits tab.
Tips
- Free and Ad-free (Tier A/B) users' photos are stored locally on the device. Subscribers (Tier C/D) have photos synced to cloud storage and available across devices.
- Tags are personal and local to your account — they are not visible to other users.
- You can write multiple journal entries for the same lighthouse (for example, if you visit it in different seasons).
