How to Add a Recipe Manually

Tomoko, a retired schoolteacher, wants to add her grandmother's miso soup recipe to Sizzle. There's no website — she knows the recipe by heart. Manual entry lets her preserve family recipes alongside her imported ones.

Steps

  1. Open the Recipes tab
  2. Tap the + button
  3. Select Enter Manually
  4. Enter the recipe title (required)
  5. Add ingredients one row at a time:
    • Tap Add Ingredient
    • Enter the quantity, unit, and ingredient name (e.g., "2 cups dashi stock")
    • Repeat for each ingredient
  6. Add numbered steps:
    • Tap Add Step
    • Type the instruction text
    • Repeat for all steps
  7. (Optional) Add a photo by tapping the photo area — choose camera or gallery
  8. (Optional) Set cook time and servings
  9. Add tags like the cuisine type, dietary notes, or custom labels (e.g., "Japanese," "family")
  10. Tap Save

Expected Outcome

The recipe appears in your collection alongside imported recipes. It's fully searchable, taggable, and can be added to shopping lists. You can edit any field at any time from the recipe detail view.

Tips

  • For ingredients, entering a quantity and unit (even approximate) ensures the recipe works with serving size scaling and shopping list combining
  • Add a cuisine tag so the recipe appears when you filter or spin the Dinner Spinner by cuisine
  • Tomoko tags her family recipes with "Japanese" and "family" — custom tags like these make filtering your personal collection much easier
  • You can take a photo of a handwritten card or the finished dish to add visual context
