How to Import a Recipe from a URL

Rosa, a busy home cook, keeps recipes bookmarked across dozens of browser tabs. She wants to import a Bon Appetit recipe into Sizzle in under 10 seconds — no copying ingredients by hand.

Steps

  1. Open the Recipes tab in Sizzle
  2. Tap the + button (or Add Recipe if your collection is empty)
  3. Select Import from URL
  4. Paste the recipe URL into the input field
  5. Tap Import
  6. Wait for the parsing indicator — most recipes parse in under 3 seconds
  7. Review the import preview: title, photo, ingredients, and steps
  8. Fix any parsing errors by tapping individual fields to edit them
  9. Tap Save to add the recipe to your collection

What Sizzle Extracts

  • Recipe title and cover photo
  • Structured ingredients: quantity, unit, and ingredient name (e.g., "2 cups all-purpose flour")
  • Numbered step-by-step instructions
  • Cook time, servings, cuisine tag
  • Aisle category for each ingredient (used for shopping list grouping)
  • Original source URL (preserved and tappable)

Two Import Paths

JSON-LD extraction (most recipe sites): If the site embeds Schema.org Recipe markup, Sizzle extracts everything on-device in under 3 seconds. Bon Appetit, Serious Eats, and most major food publications use this format.

SIPS server fallback (blogs, Reddit, others): If no structured data is found, Sizzle automatically sends the URL to the SIPS backend for server-side parsing. A "Parsing recipe..." indicator appears. This covers budget cooking blogs, Reddit cooking threads, and sites without structured data.

Both paths produce the same result — you don't need to choose.

Expected Outcome

Your recipe appears in the Recipes tab with a clean layout: title, photo, ingredients organized by aisle, and numbered steps. No ads, no life story, no scroll-to-find-ingredients.

Tips

  • Copy the full URL from your browser's address bar, not a shortened share link
  • If a URL fails twice, use Enter Manually instead and type the recipe
  • After saving, tap the recipe and use the Edit (pencil) icon to fix any ingredient errors from parsing
  • The original source URL is preserved — tap it to return to the original recipe page at any time
