How to Search and Filter Advice

Jing is a software engineer who moved to the US three years ago and is still navigating career and cultural expectations. She uses search with saved filter presets — one tap to pull up exactly the advice she needs on her morning commute.

Search by Keyword

  1. Tap the search bar at the top of the Home or Topics tab
  2. Type any keyword — search matches advice titles and body text
  3. Results appear within 300ms as you type
  4. Tap any advice card in the results to open the detail view

Filter the Feed

  1. From the Home or Topics tab, tap the filter icon
  2. A filter bottom sheet opens with these options:
    • Topic — multi-select one or more topics (Career, Finance, Relationships, Health, etc.)
    • Sort — most voted, newest, most stories
    • Time period — all time, this year, this month, this week
  3. Tap Apply — active filters appear as chips below the search bar
  4. Tap the X on any chip to remove an individual filter, or tap Clear All

Saved Filter Presets (Basic Subscription)

Basic Subscription users can save frequently-used filter combinations as named presets for one-tap access.

  1. Set up your desired filters in the filter bottom sheet
  2. Tap Save as Preset
  3. Name the preset (e.g., "Career + most voted + all time")
  4. Tap Save

To apply a saved preset:

  1. Open the filter bottom sheet
  2. Tap the preset name — all filters apply immediately
  3. The feed updates to match the preset

Jing has two saved presets: "Career + most-voted + all time" and "Social Skills + newest + this month." She applies the first one every morning on her commute.

Expected Outcome

Your filtered feed shows only advice matching your criteria. Search results appear instantly as you type and respect any active topic filters.

Tips

  • Search works offline against locally-cached advice — results may be limited to previously viewed content when disconnected
  • Combine topic filter with keyword search to narrow results quickly (e.g., search "negotiate" with Career topic filter applied)
  • Sort by "most stories" to find advice with the richest community context
  • Filter presets are especially useful if you browse the same combination of topics daily
