How to Take a Grief Dimension Assessment

Who this is for: Anyone who wants a structured, compassionate way to understand where they are in their grief right now.

Marcus retired after 30 years in the military. The identity he had built his life around was gone, and he was not sure what remained. He did not need therapy — he needed a way to understand himself. The grief dimension assessment gave him language for what he was experiencing and a picture of where he was finding footing.

Steps

  1. Tap the Assess tab: Find it in the bottom navigation bar. The Assess screen shows your assessment history and a button to start a new assessment.

  2. Tap Take Assessment: The assessment begins immediately. No setup required.

  3. Answer eight questions: Each question asks about a different aspect of your grief experience using plain, compassionate language. There are no clinical terms and no trick questions. For each question, you will respond on a gentle scale — for example, from "not at all" to "very much so."

The eight questions cover the seven grief dimensions:

    • Emotional Intensity — how heavy or overwhelming the feeling is right now
    • Daily Functioning — how much grief is affecting your sleep, work, relationships, and routines
    • Meaning-Making — whether you are able to find or seek meaning in what has happened
    • Connection — whether you feel supported and connected or isolated and alone
    • Acceptance — your relationship with the reality of the loss
    • Identity — how the loss is affecting your sense of who you are
    • Hope — whether you can imagine the future holding something for you
  4. Review your results visualization: After answering all eight questions, you see a visual summary — a chart or graphic showing each dimension on a spectrum from low to high. This is not a score or grade. It is a picture of where you are right now across the different dimensions of your experience.

  5. Read the grief dimension summary: Below the visualization, a brief summary describes what your results suggest about each dimension. The language is warm and descriptive, not diagnostic. You might read something like: "Your sense of connection appears lower right now — many people in grief find isolation is one of the heaviest parts."

  6. Explore follow-up prompts (optional): Based on your results, the app may offer a few optional reflection prompts or point you toward relevant articles in the grief education library. These are suggestions, not requirements.

Expected Outcome

Your assessment results are saved and visible in the Assess tab alongside any previous assessments. Over time, you can see how your results shift — which can be meaningful and encouraging even when change feels very slow. Each assessment is timestamped so you can track the context.

Notes

  • Grief dimension assessments are a free-tier feature. No account or subscription is required.
  • Assessments are a self-reflection tool, not a clinical diagnostic instrument. Results are not a measure of whether you are grieving "correctly" or "enough."
  • You can take an assessment as often as you like — some people find it useful to take one weekly, others take one whenever they feel a shift in their experience.
  • Results are stored locally on your device. If you have Plus with sync, they will also sync across your devices.
  • If your results suggest you may benefit from additional professional support, the app will gently note this alongside information about how to find a grief counselor. Crisis resources are always available from the Home screen.
