Exchange Tiles During a Game
Sometimes your rack is unplayable — all consonants, duplicate letters, or no good combinations with the current board. Instead of passing, you can exchange tiles to get a fresh hand.
How to Exchange Tiles
- During your turn, tap the Exchange button (below the tile rack).
- A bottom sheet slides up showing your current tiles.
- Tap the tiles you want to return to the bag — selected tiles appear highlighted.
- Tap Confirm Exchange.
- Your selected tiles are shuffled back into the bag, and you draw the same number of new tiles.
Note: Exchanging tiles ends your turn. You score 0 points for that turn.
When to Exchange
- Your rack has no vowels (or only vowels and no useful consonants).
- You have duplicate high-value tiles (two Q's, two Z's) with no way to play either.
- The board position doesn't favor your letters and you can't see a play worth more than 5–6 points.
Limits
- You can only exchange if there are at least 7 tiles remaining in the bag (you need enough to draw a full replacement hand).
- If the bag has fewer than 7 tiles, the Exchange button is disabled. Pass your turn instead.
- There's no limit on how many times you can exchange across the game.
Tip: Use the Shuffle Instead First
Before exchanging, tap the Shuffle button on your rack to re-sort your tiles in a random order. A new arrangement sometimes reveals words you couldn't see before, saving you a wasted turn.
