Play with Disconnected Words Enabled
Derek, a competitive player who loves experimenting with game mechanics, uses the Disconnected Words rule to open up early-game strategy and allow plays that aren't adjacent to existing words on the board.
What Disconnected Words Does
In standard Scrabble-style rules, every word you play must connect to at least one existing tile on the board (except the very first word). The Disconnected Words mechanic removes this restriction — you can place a complete word anywhere on an empty area of the board, even if it doesn't touch any existing tiles.
Words placed disconnected still score normally, but they do not receive adjacency bonuses from existing tiles.
Enabling Disconnected Words
- Tap New Game.
- Expand the Advanced Rules section in game configuration.
- Toggle Disconnected Words on.
- Start your game.
You can also save a preset with this setting enabled — see Save and Load a Preset.
How It Works in Play
With the rule enabled:
- You can place a valid word anywhere on the board, not just adjacent to existing tiles.
- The word must still be a complete word from your selected dictionary.
- The engine validates the word but skips the connectivity check.
- Scoring is normal — bonus squares apply for any cells your word covers.
When to Use It
- Educational games: Lets students play vocabulary words freely without being blocked by the board layout.
- Beginner mode: Reduces the complexity of finding connection points, making the game more approachable.
- Experimental play: Leads to more fragmented boards and different strategic patterns than connected play.
Notes
- When the mechanic is disabled (default), any word placed disconnected from existing tiles will be rejected. You'll see an error and your tiles will return to your rack.
- Online multiplayer games use the configuration the host set — check the game settings before joining if this matters to you.
