How to Create Your First Reminder

Opal, a graphic designer who screenshots everything from podcast quotes to street signs, captures "The obstacle is the way" from a Marcus Aurelius quote she heard on a podcast. She types it in, picks the Stoicism category, and sets it to Random mode — done in under a minute.

Steps

  1. Open the app — you land on My Reminders. Seed content (20+ pre-loaded reminders) appears immediately.

  2. Tap the "Add Reminder" FAB (floating action button, bottom right of the My Reminders tab).

  3. Enter the reminder text (required) — type or paste the quote, principle, or reflection you want to save. There's no length limit shown in the basic form.

  4. Add source/attribution (optional) — e.g., "Marcus Aurelius — Meditations" or "podcast: The Knowledge Project." This appears in the reminder detail view.

  5. Choose a category — tap the category picker and select from: Stoicism, Productivity, Gratitude, Mindfulness, Motivation, Relationships, Health, Creativity, or Custom (you can name your own category).

  6. Choose a schedule type — tap the schedule picker and select:

    • Random — this reminder is drawn from your pool at random times
    • Spaced Repetition — intervals increase over time as you engage with it (1 day → 3 days → 7 days → longer)
    • Once-a-Year — fires on the anniversary of today's date
  7. Tap Save — the reminder appears in your My Reminders list under its category, visually distinct from the pre-loaded seed reminders.

Expected Outcome

  • Your reminder appears in My Reminders under the category you selected
  • A tooltip hint may appear on your first save explaining schedule types (it only appears once)
  • The reminder immediately joins your notification rotation — when you have 3+ reminders and enable push notifications, it can appear in a notification

Tips

  • If you're capturing a quote you want to remember deeply (a principle you want to internalize), use Spaced Repetition. For everything else, Random works well.
  • Once-a-Year is especially meaningful for milestone reflections, yearly intentions, or quotes connected to a specific event in your life.
  • You can change the schedule type at any time by opening the reminder and tapping Edit.
