How to Organize Reminders with Categories and Scheduling Modes
Rafael, an executive coach with 127 reminders, uses Spaced Repetition for the professional principles he wants to internalize deeply, and Once-a-Year for his coaching milestone anniversaries. This guide explains how to apply each scheduling mode and what each one does.
Changing a Reminder's Category
- Open the reminder from My Reminders.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the category field — a picker opens showing all preset categories and any custom ones you've created.
- Select the category and save. The reminder moves to that category group in the My Reminders list immediately.
Setting or Changing the Schedule Type
- Open the reminder and tap Edit.
- Tap the schedule type field:
Random
The reminder is drawn from your pool at random, weighted toward reminders you haven't seen recently. Best for general wisdom you want to encounter unexpectedly. Most reminders work well with Random.
Spaced Repetition
Uses an SM-2 variant algorithm. After saving, the first notification fires 1 day later, then 3 days, then approximately 7 days, then longer as you continue engaging with it. If you don't interact with the notification, the interval resets. Best for principles you want to internalize deeply — the increasing interval mirrors how learning consolidates over time.
When you change a reminder to Spaced Repetition, the app shows you when the next scheduled interval will fire.
Once-a-Year
The reminder fires on the anniversary of the date it was saved. If you're setting Once-a-Year on a reminder that was saved months ago, the next notification will be on the anniversary of the original save date. Best for milestone reflections, yearly intentions, or quotes tied to a specific life moment.
When you change a reminder to Once-a-Year, the app shows you the anniversary date when this reminder will next appear.
- Save — the schedule type updates immediately and takes effect for the next scheduled notification cycle.
Viewing Your Collection by Category
My Reminders groups all reminders by category. Each category group collapses and expands — tap a category header to collapse it and focus on others.
Expected Outcome
- Reminders appear in the correct category group after editing
- Spaced Repetition reminders show their next scheduled interval in the detail view
- Once-a-Year reminders show their anniversary date in the detail view
Tips
- Rafael's breakdown: ~40% of his reminders on Spaced Repetition (principles he wants to internalize), ~15% on Once-a-Year (anniversary reflections), the rest on Random.
- You don't need to be systematic about this. Random works well for everything. Spaced Repetition and Once-a-Year are power features for users who want more intentional control.
